2016 Porch Host Spotlight #4

LIZ & SETH MARLIN –pf2016sethlizsm

Talk to us a bit about community, about yourself as an artist, and about PorchFest, please…

1 -What got you interested in PorchFest? What do you think about it?

I first learned about Porchfest via my connections in the poetry scene, and was intrigued by the idea of bringing the arts home into our local neighborhoods. There’s a practice in the slam world, known as “ciphering,” which refers to setting up guerrilla poetry performances in public places, akin to a cross between street art and a flash mob. I was intrigued by that idea when I first heard of it, and have always wanted to find ways to inject art into ordinary people’s days. There’s this tendency where people in Spokane tend to think of arts and culture as something they have to go elsewhere to find, and this seemed like a great way to show them that it’s right here at home.

2- How often do you get over to West Central?

I actually live in West Central – my wife and I bought a house here in June of 2015, shortly before welcoming our son into the world, and so we’re in it for the long haul. For all the smug joking about “Felony Flats,” this neighborhood actually has a lot going for it. It’s not only incredibly affordable, it’s also close to downtown and provides access to all the things we love about this city. A number of writers and artists live in the neighborhood, and there’s also great access to nature via the Centennial Trail

3- What have you been doing to build community?

I’ve been very active since moving to Spokane, first with EWU’s Writers in the Community outreach program, and then later getting involved with the local poetry scene and providing a supportive space for people to come and learn to express themselves. Art is therapeutic in my experience, and whether it’s teaching creative-writing workshops to prison inmates out at Airway Heights, or supporting people as they learn to develop their voices upon the slam stage, I believe that what we do here has the power to unite and to heal. If I could do anything, I’d love to continue that work in other settings, be it with at-risk youth or with veteran’s groups.

4- Why should people attend this year?

Come to Porchfest because you like free art. Come to Porchfest because you like free music. Come to Porchfest because you’ve never met half the people on your own block. Come because there are young poets and musicians in this town, right now, doing things that you will never find in places like Portland or Seattle. Come because you want to. Come because you have to. Come because you need this, more than you know.

Trees Rock Route

Two of these “porches” are in gardens. Follow tree-lined streets from porch to porch. Finish with a rock band, then head across the street where you can let the kids play on the playground equipment.

Talk to us a bit about community, about yourselves, and about PorchFest, please…

1 – What do you like about PorchFest?

This is our first PorchFest and we thought it would be fun to host in Kendall Yards. I just moved from Perry Street last year.

2 – What things will you be doing to make this year’s event super special?

We’ll actually be having PatioFest – facing the Centennial Trail!

2016 Participant Spotlight #1

MATT LOI –pf2016mattsm

There are many ways to help make PorchFest West Central a success. Matt has helped to spread the word and connect us with artists.

“I was a music major and physics minor at EWU. I suppose this was a roundabout way of getting at what I really want to do: audio engineering. I currently play bass guitar with Atlas Hugged and upright bass with Sweet Rebel D.”

1 -What got you interested in PorchFest? What do you think about it?

Having put musicians on the radio for nearly a decade, I’ve grown to love the Spokane music scene and all the amazingly creative people involved. These musicians and this original way of highlighting them are what brought my attention to PorchFest. Even though I’m neither a performer nor a host for the event, I’m happy to help out in some small ways: getting talented musician Tonya Ballman into the line-up and doing some promoting. Aside for attending multiple local gigs on a typical week, I also write about them for Spokane Coeur d’Alene Living Magazine.

2- How often do you get over to West Central?

The drummer in one of my bands lives in West Central, so we meet for rehearsals regularly. It’s great to see the arts showcased in a nearby and unexpected place!

3- What is “community”? How do we build it?

Our creative community is whatever we make it, for better or worse. However, I’m an optimist to a fault on this topic, so I’m convinced we have the potential to make something awesome happen. Ultimately, we need positive individuals with a vision and follow-through. Spokane is lucky to have Marshall around!

4- Why should people attend this year?

This PorchFest, I hope people get to experience a great range of Spokane-based musicians and poets in a fun and friendly environment. I hope those interested in the arts get to mingle with the neighbors of West Central and enjoy the sights and sounds. This is where community-building happens.

“Old” West Central Route

This is definitely a walker’s route right through the heart of West Central. Make sure to put on your walking shoes or grab your bike. Boone is also a main street, so there’s plenty of traffic. Those blocks that look like long blocks on the map? They’re long blocks. 😉 A great opportunity to hear lots of poetry. Enjoy!

Eastern Route

Some people LOVE planning! For them, it’s at least half the fun.

If you’d rather spend your time following a pre-planned plan than planning it, here’s an option:

There are many different ways to choose what porches you’ll visit on Saturday. All of them are valid. Crunched for time and love to bike? Here’s an option:

2016 Performer Spotlight #1

JANET & BRETT DODD – DUET  – FOLK, AMERICANA, BLUEGRASS

pf2016janetbrettsm

Music and performing for us are mostly about connecting with people and community.  As a couple music was one of the things that brought us together and is how we connect with others.  Performing gives us a chance to share the songs and stories that have meaning to us.

Talk to us a bit about community, about yourself as an artist, and about PorchFest, please…

1 -What got you interested in PorchFest? What do you think about it?

Our interest in Porchfest began with one of our good friends and great song finder, Kevin Watkins, who lives in the PorchFest zone!  We play a lot on our own porch. Using music as a means to connect and create community is awesome!

2- What were your favorite things about last year’s PorchFest?

Seeing people’s smiles as they heard a tune or reacted to our own smiles!  Seeing people out of their homes in the neighborhood connecting.

3- What is “community”? How do we build it?

Community is people connecting.  We create it by finding ways to connect….  I think there do need to be catalysts, people who go out of their way (like Marshall) to support events that bring people together for music, art, poetry, outdoor events etc.

4- What have you done to build community?

Not enough…. But we jump at opportunities to connect with others often through music but we push ourselves to explore new areas where we might find common ground with people!

5- What do you hope to accomplish at PorchFest? What do you want to help PorchFest accomplish?

Connect, smile, be in the moment…. Let the music be.

6- What things will you be doing to make this year’s event super special?

Its always special but we’ll stretch ourselves and play some more risky stuff so that it is more like us just playing on our own porch as opposed to “performance”….  We want to just play and that sometimes has many elements of non-perfection which is more real in terms of porch music…. Last time we had someone request a song and we simply asked them if they knew it and would sing… that’s porch music!

7- Why should be attend this year?

They should come because more and more we need to find things that unite us.

We hope that PorchFest allows us the chance to meet more neighbors in West Central and Kendall Yards.

4 –  What things will you be doing to make this year’s event super special?

We are inviting friends and family to come to the event and see how great West Central is.
