2016 Porch Host Spotlight #4

LIZ & SETH MARLIN –pf2016sethlizsm

Talk to us a bit about community, about yourself as an artist, and about PorchFest, please…

1 -What got you interested in PorchFest? What do you think about it?

I first learned about Porchfest via my connections in the poetry scene, and was intrigued by the idea of bringing the arts home into our local neighborhoods. There’s a practice in the slam world, known as “ciphering,” which refers to setting up guerrilla poetry performances in public places, akin to a cross between street art and a flash mob. I was intrigued by that idea when I first heard of it, and have always wanted to find ways to inject art into ordinary people’s days. There’s this tendency where people in Spokane tend to think of arts and culture as something they have to go elsewhere to find, and this seemed like a great way to show them that it’s right here at home.

2- How often do you get over to West Central?

I actually live in West Central – my wife and I bought a house here in June of 2015, shortly before welcoming our son into the world, and so we’re in it for the long haul. For all the smug joking about “Felony Flats,” this neighborhood actually has a lot going for it. It’s not only incredibly affordable, it’s also close to downtown and provides access to all the things we love about this city. A number of writers and artists live in the neighborhood, and there’s also great access to nature via the Centennial Trail

3- What have you been doing to build community?

I’ve been very active since moving to Spokane, first with EWU’s Writers in the Community outreach program, and then later getting involved with the local poetry scene and providing a supportive space for people to come and learn to express themselves. Art is therapeutic in my experience, and whether it’s teaching creative-writing workshops to prison inmates out at Airway Heights, or supporting people as they learn to develop their voices upon the slam stage, I believe that what we do here has the power to unite and to heal. If I could do anything, I’d love to continue that work in other settings, be it with at-risk youth or with veteran’s groups.

4- Why should people attend this year?

Come to Porchfest because you like free art. Come to Porchfest because you like free music. Come to Porchfest because you’ve never met half the people on your own block. Come because there are young poets and musicians in this town, right now, doing things that you will never find in places like Portland or Seattle. Come because you want to. Come because you have to. Come because you need this, more than you know.

Trees Rock Route

Two of these “porches” are in gardens. Follow tree-lined streets from porch to porch. Finish with a rock band, then head across the street where you can let the kids play on the playground equipment.

Talk to us a bit about community, about yourselves, and about PorchFest, please…

1 – What do you like about PorchFest?

This is our first PorchFest and we thought it would be fun to host in Kendall Yards. I just moved from Perry Street last year.

2 – What things will you be doing to make this year’s event super special?

We’ll actually be having PatioFest – facing the Centennial Trail!

“Old” West Central Route

This is definitely a walker’s route right through the heart of West Central. Make sure to put on your walking shoes or grab your bike. Boone is also a main street, so there’s plenty of traffic. Those blocks that look like long blocks on the map? They’re long blocks. 😉 A great opportunity to hear lots of poetry. Enjoy!

Eastern Route

Some people LOVE planning! For them, it’s at least half the fun.

If you’d rather spend your time following a pre-planned plan than planning it, here’s an option:

Bicycle/Centennial Trail Route

There are many different ways to choose what porches you’ll visit on Saturday. All of them are valid. Crunched for time and love to bike? Here’s an option:

1 – What is “community”?

Some volunteer work. We’ve tried to be good neighbors.

3 –  What do you hope to accomplish at PorchFest? What do you want to help PorchFest accomplish?

We hope that PorchFest allows us the chance to meet more neighbors in West Central and Kendall Yards.

4 –  What things will you be doing to make this year’s event super special?

We are inviting friends and family to come to the event and see how great West Central is.

5 –  What should be attend PorchFest this year?

The music and poetry will be fantastic. And it’s a great opportunity to meet new friends.

2016 Porch Host Spotlight #1

Becky & Bobby LOVED PorchFest last year and wanted be a “porch” really bad this year in order to help the festival grow. This is especially cool because this will be the first year that the The Highline at Kendall Yards will be a part (apartments). We hope they’re setting an example and more apartments jump on board next year. Thanks Becky and Bobby!

2015 Porch Host Spotlight #9

Talk to us a bit about community, about yourselves, and about PorchFest, please…

1-What got you interested in PorchFest? What do you think about it?

When we moved to Kendall Yards we made a commitment to be involved in our community, West Central.  When we were approached to host our porch, it was an easy “yes”!  What better way to bring people together than with music?  Our hope is that PorchFest becomes an annual event.

2- What is community? How do we build it?

Community is the relationships and interactions of its people. It’s celebrating together, solving problems together, listening to one another and offering a helping hand.  We can build it by being intentional and committed to connecting with our neighbors and surrounding neighborhoods.
It doesn’t happen automatically.  It takes people.

3-Why should people come to the event?

Simply stated, good people…good music… and an opportunity to build community togetherness.
